Things to Do in Vera Playa Beyond the Beach
March 5, 2026
activitiesMore Than Just a Beach Holiday
While the beach is the main draw, Vera Playa and the surrounding Almeria coast offer a wealth of activities and excursions for when you want a change of scenery. From stunning natural parks to historic towns, here is what to do beyond the sand.
Sports and Activities
Water Sports
The calm Mediterranean waters around Vera Playa are perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkelling. Equipment can be rented from beach operators during summer. For scuba diving, head to Cabo de Gata where the underwater visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres.
Puerto Rey Sports Club
Located within the Vera Playa area, Puerto Rey offers tennis courts, padel courts, a gym, and a swimming pool. Many visitors take up padel during their holiday — Spain's most popular racquet sport. Courts can be booked by the hour, and lessons are available.
Cycling
The flat coastal roads between Vera Playa, Garrucha, and Mojacar are ideal for cycling. Mountain biking enthusiasts can explore the trails through the Sierra Cabrera hills behind the coast. Several shops in the area rent bikes.
Golf
Desert Springs Golf Club, just 15 minutes from Vera Playa, offers an 18-hole championship course set in a striking desert landscape. Valle del Este, near Vera town, is another excellent option with a resort-style course.
Nature and Excursions
Cabo de Gata Natural Park
Spain's first maritime-terrestrial natural park is a 40-minute drive south of Vera Playa and absolutely worth a day trip. The park features volcanic landscapes, hidden coves, salt flats teeming with flamingos, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the Mediterranean.
Must-see spots:
- Arrecife de las Sirenas (Reef of the Mermaids) at the lighthouse
- Playa de Monsul and Playa de los Genoveses
- The white village of San Jose
- The salt flats near Las Salinas (flamingos from October to March)
Mini Hollywood (Tabernas)
About 90 minutes from Vera Playa, the Tabernas Desert — Europe's only true desert — is home to Mini Hollywood, a Western film set where movies like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly were filmed. Now a theme park, it offers Wild West shows, a zoo, and tours of the original film sets.
Sierra de los Filabres
For serious hikers, the Sierra de los Filabres mountain range offers trails up to 2,168 metres at Calar Alto, home to one of Europe's most important astronomical observatories. The higher altitudes provide a cool escape from summer heat.
Cultural Experiences
Mojacar Pueblo
This stunning white hilltop village, 20 minutes from Vera Playa, is a maze of narrow streets, craft shops, and viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean. Visit in the evening for dinner with sunset views. The village hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the Moors and Christians festival in June.
Vera Town
The inland town of Vera has a rich history dating back to the Moors. Visit the Plaza Mayor, the Iglesia de la Encarnacion, and the town museum. Thursday is market day — an authentic Spanish market experience with local produce, clothing, and household goods.
Cuevas del Almanzora
The town of Cuevas, 20 minutes north, has a fascinating castle-museum and is known for its cave houses (casas cueva) carved into the hillside. The local archaeological museum is one of the best in the province.
Evening Entertainment
Vera Playa has a relaxed evening scene. Most socialising happens at Chiringuito Natsun and the bars in the commercial zone. For a livelier night out, Garrucha's harbour-front bars and Mojacar's Pueblo Indalo area offer more options.
